The first batch of dairy waste-derived bio-based fertiliser (BBF) developed within LANDFEED Use Case 5 and supplied by project partner Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WUST) is currently being evaluated under field conditions.
Field microplot experiments began this spring at the Jelcz-Laskowice Experimental Station, part of the research infrastructure of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Institute (IUNG-PIB) in Poland. The trials are assessing the agronomic performance of the novel BBF at two application rates on two major cereal crops: spring wheat and maize.
These crops were selected due to their global significance. Together, wheat and maize are among the world’s most widely cultivated cereals and play a vital role in food production, animal feed, and industrial value chains.



The experiment will continue until full crop maturity, allowing researchers to collect grain samples for further analysis. Throughout the study, comprehensive assessments of plant nutrition and soil quality will be carried out in line with the project’s common methodology. Plant and soil samples will be analysed in IUNG’s accredited laboratory to evaluate the effects of BBF application on crop nutrition and soil properties.
In parallel, soil samples are being collected according to the common LANDFEED protocol. Four sampling campaigns have been scheduled during the experimental period. These samples are undergoing soil health analyses conducted by WUST, enabling researchers to assess the BBF’s impact on soil quality and functionality.
All activities are progressing according to schedule. Once the two-year field study is completed, the results will support the preparation of documentation required for the fertiliser certification process, which is also carried out by IUNG in Poland.
