From Waste to Value: How LANDFEED Helps Us Reduce, Recycle, and Regenerate

Across Europe, bio-waste remains an untapped resource. Each year, households, restaurants and industries discard vast amounts of food and organic matter that could instead be prevented, repurposed or transformed into valuable products. Europe generates more than 86 million tonnes of bio-waste annually, yet less than half is collected separately for treatment.

That is why LANDFEED launched the “Reduce – Recycle – Regenerate” social media campaign: to share practical tips with citizens and organisations, while showing how our project is working to create sustainable, circular solutions.

REDUCE: Cutting down on avoidable waste

The most effective way to tackle bio-waste is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. The European Commission stresses that reducing food waste is central to building sustainable food systems. Small changes in daily habits can make a big difference:

  • Plan your meals to buy only what you need.
  • Store food correctly: for example, keep bread in cloth bags, potatoes in a cool dark place, and herbs in a glass of water.
  • Check expiry dates and understand the difference between “use by” (a food safety deadline) and “best before” (a quality indicator).
  • Cook with creativity: leftovers can easily become soups, stir-fries or lunch boxes.
  • Portion wisely at home and when eating out to avoid plate waste.
  • Freeze food before it spoils to extend its life.
  • Share surplus with neighbours, through food-sharing apps or community fridges.
  • Compost at home if municipal options are not available.

By adopting these practices, households can save money while helping to reduce the estimated 58 million tonnes of food wasted in the EU each year.

RECYCLE: Giving bio-waste a second life

Not all food waste can be avoided – but when it does occur, recycling ensures it is put to good use. Correctly sorting and collecting bio-waste allows it to be processed into compost, digestate or energy. Separating food waste from other rubbish is crucial to making recycling systems effective.

Here are some steps to make recycling work:

  • Sort bio-waste correctly: keep it separate from plastics, glass and metals.
  • Know your local system: some municipalities collect kitchen waste separately, others require home composting.
  • Avoid contamination: do not throw packaging, plastics or liquids into bio-waste bins.
  • Use compostable bags if provided by your collection service.
  • Join community composting initiatives where available.
  • Return nutrients to the soil: bio-waste becomes high-quality compost or digestate for agriculture.
  • Follow local guides: recycling rules differ across regions.
  • Support circular practices: for example, by choosing businesses that recycle their food waste.

Effective recycling transforms waste into resources, reducing the pressure on landfills and closing nutrient loops.

REGENERATE: Transforming bio-waste into solutions

LANDFEED goes beyond prevention and recycling. Our project is developing innovative bio-based fertilisers that regenerate value from waste, helping to make European agriculture more sustainable. Instead of being lost, nutrients are recovered and reintroduced into the food system.

This regenerative approach delivers multiple benefits:

  • Bio-waste from households, restaurants and food services becomes a resource.
  • Recovered nutrients reduce dependence on synthetic fertilisers.
  • Farmers gain access to slow-release fertilisers that are more efficient and environmentally friendly.
  • Society benefits from lower emissions, healthier soils and a more circular bioeconomy.

Tackling food loss and waste is not only about efficiency but also about creating opportunities for innovation and resilience. LANDFEED is contributing to this transformation by demonstrating how research and technology can unlock the hidden potential of bio-waste.

Working together for change

By reducing waste, recycling what we cannot avoid, and regenerating value from what remains, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future. LANDFEED is working with partners across Europe to make this transformation possible, but it begins with everyday actions at home, in restaurants and in communities.
